I'm not an Yanmar expert by any means. I know they exist, but I don't know squat about their track record. Hell, I've never had one on the job site. But a whole heck of a lot of people are searching out the Yanmar Bo8 3. Ebay doesn't have any for sale right now--a true sign that everyone is looking for them, but there are some good deals on Yanmar out there. I'm going to hop over to the Yanmar site and see what can be seen. I'm a bit amazed at the sudden popularity and if anyone can enlighten me, I'm all ears. I've been hearing a great deal about Link-belt excavators lately on the blog and decided to showcase what is currently out there in their LX Series. I'll be honest with you, I haven't been around many Link-Belt diggers, but I'd always assumed they have a fairly strong fan base for how long they've been around. Been doing a remodel on a warehouse here in town. The floor of the warehouse is 50 year old concrete. We needed to zip a trench for the sewer and grease interceptor system. After putting manual labor on it to saw the top off we rolled in a mini Bobcat excavator to finish off the rest. Parts and technical manuals for construction diggers are hard to come by sometimes. But not online. You can find just about any excavator manual you can dream of for a pretty fair price. My dad offered a good bit of advice when I first started in the industry--get your manuals in order before something goes wrong. Not to many folks know this, but Daewoo stands for 'Great Universe' in Korean. I think the term was originally used to describe the fact that their ultra-large conglomerate of corporation's made everything from computers and TVs to cars and excavators. For a while, they were their own universe. Regardless, Daewoo makes a pretty reliable digger for a fairly reasonable price. The resale value seems to hold as well. As usual, deals on construction diggers come and go with each passing day, so you might want to bookmark this page so you can visit it once in a while till you find the excavator that your looking for. Kubota makes a fair number of excavators and many of them are of high quality. The Kubota KX 161-3 is one of their more reliable machines. Not only that, but the 161-3 is very popular and because of that deals can be hard to find. But wait around long enough and the deals do come. What's nice about Kubotas popularity is that there are a ton of KXs out there so deals are more likely to happen than not. Check out these Kubota KX 161-3 excavator deals on Ebay.

Affordable excavators are difficult to come by. The good ones never come down in price and the low-power, poor-performing machines aren't worth the time it takes to place your bid. But, it doesn't mean you shouldn't look. Deals come and go here quick. And as long as you don't purchase on price alone, you should do OK. I'm actually going to come up with a new system of searching that is based on digging depth and power. I'd like to do by year as well, but I don't think that is as good an indicator of quality or performance. Tell me what you think if you have the time.

In other news, it looks like Link-Belt has been sold to a Japanese Corporation. CNH Global N.V. (CNH, NHL.BE) said it has sold its stake in Link-Belt excavators to Japan's Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co.

CNH acknowledged last month that it has been losing market share in construction equipment to competitors, including Caterpillar Inc. (CAT), Deere & Co. (DE) and Terex Corp (TEX). The company said it doesn't expect the construction business to earn a profit until 2011.

That last little bit of information about profit doesn't site well with me. Hopefully they are speculating about their own construction market--the buying and selling of equipment--and not the local economies in which we all work.
